What does air conditioning really cost to buy, install and run in 2026? Here are the real numbers - national installed prices, what pushes a quote up or down, running costs for cooling AND heating, and how to spot a quote that has quietly left things out. Installed prices in 2026

National figures for supplied-and-installed systems, from the major cost-guide surveys this year:

  • Single-room wall split - most homeowners pay £1,600 to £2,800; budget systems from around £1,500, premium brands in awkward spots up to £3,000
  • Two-room multi-split - typically £2,800 to £4,500
  • Three to four rooms - typically £3,500 to £7,000

What moves the price

  • Unit brand and size - the biggest single factor. A quality 2.5 kilowatt bedroom unit and a premium 5 kilowatt living-room unit are hundreds of pounds apart at trade
  • Pipe-run length and route - back-to-back installs (unit directly behind the outdoor position) are the cheapest; long runs through lofts or around elevations add pipe, trunking and time
  • Wall construction and access - a core drill through brick is routine; solid stone, high walls or scaffold needs are not
  • The electrical work - every install needs a dedicated circuit and isolator, and sometimes fuse board work. This is our own trade, included in the fixed price - on other quotes it is often an exclusion in the small print
  • Condensate route - gravity drains are simple; where a pump is needed, it is priced in from the start, not discovered later

Running costs: cooling and heating

Cooling: a typical 2.5 kilowatt bedroom unit draws well under a kilowatt in normal use - roughly 15p to 25p an hour at current electricity prices. Run it every summer night for a month and you have spent less than a takeaway.

Heating is where the sums get interesting. Every modern wall split is a reversible air-to-air heat pump delivering 3 to 4 kilowatts of heat per kilowatt of electricity. Against plug-in panel or storage heaters, that is roughly a 70 percent cut in running cost for the same warmth - transformative for flats, conservatories, garden offices and any home without mains gas. Against a gas boiler it is broadly at parity on a standard tariff, and cheaper on smart time-of-use tariffs.

The winter trick

Air conditioning is a summer purchase with a winter price. Demand collapses outside the heatwaves, installer diaries open up, and pricing typically runs 5 to 10 percent keener between October and March. Buy in the cool months and you get the sharper price, no waiting list, and a unit that immediately starts earning as cheap room heating - then summer arrives already sorted.

How to compare quotes

  • Is the electrical circuit included? A dedicated circuit is required. If the quote does not mention it, it is probably an extra
  • Is the number plus VAT? Many are. Ours has no VAT to add at all
  • Who does the refrigerant work? The law requires an F-Gas certified engineer for the refrigerant connections and commissioning - ask, and expect a straight answer. On our installs that work is completed by an F-Gas certified engineer and the manufacturer's warranty is registered on completion
  • Is the noise assessment done? Permitted development depends on a noise check to the current MCS standard. A proper installer does it at the survey, not after a neighbour complains
  • Is the price fixed? Ours is: the written figure only changes if you change the job
