Terms and Conditions
These are the terms under which Dorset Rewires quotes, supplies and installs electrical work. They apply to every quote, order and invoice unless we have signed a separate written agreement with you.
Last updated: 7 July 2026. Version 1.1.
Dorset Rewires is a sole-trader business run by Peter Roberts ("we", "us"), serving homeowners, developers and commercial clients ("you", "the client") across Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch and Dorset.
1. Quotation and acceptance
1.1 Quotes are valid for 30 days from the date issued. After 30 days, prices may be revised in writing.
1.2 A quote is an offer. The contract forms when you accept it in writing (a signed quote, an email confirming, or a signed work order). Verbal acceptance is not binding on us.
1.3 Fixed-price quotes are based on the visual survey on the date stated. If access is restricted at survey (a boarded loft, fitted units, locked rooms), discovery work during the install may trigger a written variation. See clause 4.
1.4 A quote excludes anything not expressly listed. We routinely exclude: redecoration, plaster make-good, flooring lift and relay, scaffolding, asbestos removal, builders' work beyond standard chasing, moving furniture, and disconnecting or reconnecting white goods.
2. Deposit and stage payments
2.1 A 5% booking deposit secures your dates once you accept the quote.
2.2 For work under £3,000, the balance is due on completion.
2.3 For work over £3,000, payment runs on the staged schedule below, tied to material delivery and progress. Each share is a percentage of the total job price.
| Stage | When | Share of total |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit | Booking deposit when you give the go-ahead, to lock your dates | 5% |
| 1 | End of Day 1 of first fix, once we are on site and all first-fix materials are delivered | 20% |
| 2 | First fix complete | 25% |
| 3 | End of Day 1 of second fix, once all second-fix materials are on site | 25% |
| 4 | Sockets and lights live and tested | 15% |
| 5 | Full completion, paid before the Electrical Installation Certificate is handed over | 10% |
2.4 Stage payments are due on the day of the milestone, by bank transfer, card or cheque. Late stage payments suspend work until cleared, and may trigger interest under clause 8.
2.5 For development and commercial contracts, payment terms are set out in the specific contract. We accept JCT-style 2.5% retention released 12 months after practical completion. We do not accept ad-hoc retention that was not agreed in writing at quote stage.
3. Materials
3.1 All materials we supply remain our property until paid for in full ("retention of title"). We may enter and recover unpaid materials. Risk of loss or damage passes to you when materials are delivered to site.
3.2 We supply materials at cost. We do not mark up materials - our margin is in our labour, and your price is fixed in writing. You never pay more for the parts than we do.
3.3 If you supply materials, we accept no responsibility for their fitness, quality, warranty or compliance. We may refuse to fit customer-supplied items that we consider unsafe or non-compliant with BS 7671.
3.4 If a specified product becomes unavailable, we will substitute an equivalent or better product of the same standard and tell you in writing. The price stays the same unless you ask for a specific upgrade.
4. Variations and extras
4.1 Any change to the agreed scope (adding sockets, moving the consumer unit, changing finishes) is a variation. Variations must be agreed in writing before that work proceeds.
4.2 Urgent variations on site (small additions you ask for while we are working) are billed at £50 per hour labour plus materials at cost, recorded in our site daybook and signed at the end of each working day.
4.3 If we discover work that was not visible or testable at survey (asbestos, lath-and-plaster walls, wiring failing safety standards, a structural surprise), we will stop, photograph it, quote the additional work in writing, and only continue once you have accepted the variation.
4.4 You have 10 working days to dispute a variation in writing. After 10 working days the variation is treated as accepted.
5. Your responsibilities
5.1 You will provide reasonable working access during agreed hours (by default 07:00 to 19:00, Monday to Saturday).
5.2 You will provide working power and water on site, and arrange parking. Congestion charges, residents' parking permits and paid parking are billed at cost.
5.3 You will tell us in advance about any concealed services (water, gas, alarm cabling, network) and any known asbestos or other hazardous materials.
5.4 For full house rewires we strongly prefer the property to be empty. Working in an occupied property is possible, but it adds daily make-safe, dust protection and a longer programme. These costs are itemised in the quote.
5.5 You are responsible for buildings and contents insurance throughout the works.
6. Workmanship guarantee
6.1 We guarantee our workmanship for 10 years from the date of the Electrical Installation Certificate, on any work that we install in full.
6.2 The guarantee covers labour to put right any defect caused by our workmanship, or by non-compliance with BS 7671 in force at the time of installation.
6.3 The guarantee does not cover: customer-supplied materials, items installed against our recommendation, parts beyond their manufacturer warranty, alterations made by you or another contractor after handover, third-party damage (rodents, water ingress, building works), misuse, neglect, or pre-existing wiring outside the scope of the quoted job.
6.4 To make a guarantee claim, write to us within 14 days of finding the defect, with photos and the certificate reference. You agree not to attempt your own repair, because doing so voids cover.
7. Certification and Building Control
7.1 We issue an Electrical Installation Certificate for all work. Notifiable work is notified to Building Control.
7.2 You receive an Electrical Installation Certificate on full payment. We notify Building Control within 30 days. You then receive the Building Regulations Compliance Certificate within about 30 days of that notification.
7.3 The certificate and Building Regs certificate are released after final payment. We will not release certification on credit.
8. Invoices and late payment
8.1 Invoices for completed work (and for materials at first fix) are due on the day stated. For commercial and developer accounts we extend to net 30 days where agreed in writing.
8.2 Late payments accrue statutory interest at 8% above the Bank of England base rate under the Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998, calculated daily from 14 days after the invoice date, plus reasonable recovery costs.
8.3 We may suspend work and withhold certificates while payments are outstanding.
9. Cancellation
9.1 Your right to cancel (consumers): because we agree contracts with you away from our business premises (at your home, or by phone or email), you have a legal right to cancel within 14 days without giving a reason. The 14 days start the day you accept our quote. This is your right under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.
9.2 How to cancel: tell us before the 14 days are up - email [email protected], call 07836 535100, or write to us. You can use the cancellation form we provide with your quote, but you do not have to. We will confirm we have received it.
9.3 If you ask us to start within the 14 days: you can ask us to begin sooner. If you then cancel, you pay only for the work done and any bespoke materials already ordered, up to the point you told us. If work has not started, you get a full refund of your deposit within 14 days.
9.4 Refunds: where a refund is due, we pay it within 14 days, by the same method you paid, unless you agree otherwise.
9.5 Cancellation by you after work has started: you pay in full for work completed, materials ordered (whether delivered or not), and reasonable demobilisation. Bespoke or non-stock materials are non-refundable to us.
9.6 Cancellation by us: we may end the contract if you breach the payment terms, the site is unsafe, you obstruct our work, or it becomes unlawful to continue. In that case you pay for the work done to date and our committed material costs.
10. Liability and insurance
10.1 We carry £5,000,000 Public Liability insurance and £5,000,000 Employer's Liability insurance. Certificates are available on request.
10.2 Our total liability under or in connection with any contract is capped at the lower of (a) the contract value and (b) £5,000,000. Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for any other liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.
10.3 We are not liable for indirect, consequential, special or punitive losses: loss of profit, loss of business, loss of data, loss of use, or loss of opportunity.
10.4 We are not liable for delay or failure caused by events outside our reasonable control (force majeure): severe weather, fire, flood, pandemic, supplier failure, power-network outages, war, or industrial action. The programme is suspended for the duration of the event.
11. Photography and marketing
11.1 We may photograph completed work to keep a record of what was installed and where, and for marketing on our website and social channels.
11.2 We will remove or blur anything that personally identifies you (house numbers, faces, doormats) unless you give written consent.
11.3 If you do not want any photography for marketing, tell us in writing before we start. We will still photograph for our own records and for the certificate.
12. Data and privacy
12.1 We process your personal data (name, address, phone, email, payment details) only to deliver the work and meet our legal obligations (HMRC, Building Control).
12.2 We keep certification, scheme and tax records for the legal minimum, which is currently at least 6 years.
12.3 We do not sell your data, and we do not share it outside our scheme operator, our accountant, and our own employed electricians working on the job.
12.4 Our full privacy notice explains this in detail: read our Privacy Policy.
13. Our team and subcontracting
13.1 We may use our own employed (PAYE) electricians and apprentices to deliver work under Pete's supervision. They all work under our supervision and within their qualifications.
13.2 We do not subcontract to outside firms without your written consent.
14. Complaints
14.1 If anything is wrong, tell us first. Write to [email protected] or call 07836 535100. We will respond within 5 working days and aim to resolve any reasonable complaint within 28 days.
14.2 If we cannot resolve it together, you may escalate to an alternative dispute resolution service.
15. Referral rewards
15.1 If you refer someone to us and they book work, we pay you a referral reward. We pay it once your friend has accepted their quote and paid their booking deposit.
15.2 The reward depends on the job your friend books: £300 for a full rewire, new build or large renovation; £150 for a partial rewire or an extension; £50 for a fuseboard (consumer unit) upgrade or a smaller job.
15.3 One reward is paid per booked job. We pay by bank transfer, or another method we agree, within 14 days of the deposit clearing.
15.4 We decide which category a job falls into, acting reasonably. No reward is due if your friend cancels before work starts, if the job does not go ahead, or if the referral is not genuine (for example, referring your own job).
16. General
16.1 These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. The courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction.
16.2 If any clause is found unenforceable, the rest stays in force.
16.3 We may update these terms from time to time. The version in effect on the date of your quote is the version that applies to that contract.
