Why Bournemouth homes need rewiring

Bournemouth has a lot of older housing, and older homes are often still on their first set of wiring. Over time that wiring wears out. The insulation goes brittle, the old fusebox has no modern shock protection, and there are never enough sockets. A full rewire fixes all of it in one go and brings the house up to today's safety standards. If yours has not been rewired in 25 to 30 years, or you are not sure, it is worth a look.

Near the coast there is another problem. Salt air corrodes outdoor fittings, so we use marine-grade parts where it matters, like an outside light or an EV charger.

A hidden danger we check for: the broken ring main

Here is one most homeowners have never heard of. Your sockets are usually fed by a loop of cable called a ring main, with two routes sharing the load. Drive a screw or a nail through one side of that loop, or leave a poor joint hidden behind the plaster, and every socket carries on working exactly as before. Nothing looks wrong.

The danger is what you cannot see. With one side of the loop broken, a single cable is now doing the work of two, and it runs hot inside the wall. Left long enough, that is a fire waiting to happen. We check every ring main for breaks during the survey, and a full rewire removes the risk for good.

Signs your home needs a rewire

  • An old fuseboard with rewireable fuse wire or a wooden back
  • No test buttons on the board (no RCD, so no modern shock protection)
  • Black rubber or fabric cable instead of modern grey or white
  • Not enough sockets, so extension leads everywhere
  • Lights dim when the shower or the kettle comes on
  • Fuses blow or the power trips for no clear reason
  • Scorch marks, buzzing or a burning smell at a socket or the board

Do you have to move out?

For a full house rewire we work on empty properties only. It is faster, cleaner and cheaper for you, and we can film the progress for you to see. The best time is before you move in, between tenants, or as part of a renovation. For smaller jobs, like a consumer unit upgrade, an EICR or an EV charger, you can stay in the home.
