Privacy Policy

This notice explains, in plain English, what personal information Dorset Rewires collects, why we collect it, who we share it with and how we keep it safe. We have kept it short and honest.

Who we are

Dorset Rewires is a sole-trader electrical business, run by Peter Roberts, covering Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch and the wider Dorset area. Peter Roberts, trading as Dorset Rewires, is the "data controller" for the information you give us. That means we decide how it is used and we are responsible for looking after it.

We are a small business, so we do not have a Data Protection Officer, and we are not required to appoint one.

What we collect

We only collect what we need to quote for your work and carry it out. When you use our instant quote tool, our callback form, or contact us directly, that is usually:

  • Your name
  • Your phone number
  • Your email address
  • Your postcode or the property address
  • Details of the job you want done

If you go on to become a customer, we will also hold the records of the work, your quote and invoices, and the electrical certificates for the job. We do not collect any "special category" data (such as health or ethnicity), and we do not ask for card details on this website.

How we collect it

We only collect information that you give us directly: through the quote tool, the callback form, by phone, by email, or in person when we survey or carry out the work. We do not buy contact lists and we do not track you around the web.

Why we use it, and our legal basis

UK data protection law (the UK GDPR) says we have to tell you why we use your information and what our lawful reason is. Ours are:

  • To prepare your quote and carry out your work. Legal basis: a contract, or taking steps at your request before a contract. When you ask us for a quote we have to use your details to give you one, even if you do not go ahead.
  • To respond to enquiries and run our business (keeping a record of who contacted us, following up, answering questions). Legal basis: our legitimate interests in responding to you and running the business properly.
  • To meet our legal duties (tax records for HMRC, electrical certification and safety records, scheme rules). Legal basis: a legal obligation.

We do not use your information for marketing unless you have asked us to, and we never sell it.

Who we share it with

We keep your information to ourselves as much as possible. We only share it with the small number of trusted providers and people we need to do the job:

  • Cloudflare - hosts this website and runs the form that sends your enquiry to us.
  • Brevo - the service that emails your enquiry through to us.
  • Zoho - our email inbox, where your enquiry arrives.
  • Google - if you choose to leave us a review, that review is handled by Google and is public.
  • Our accountant or bookkeeper - for tax and accounts.
  • Our employed electricians - the team member doing your job only gets the details they need.

We do not sell your data or pass it to anyone for their own marketing.

Sending data outside the UK. Some of our providers (such as Cloudflare and Google) are based in or store data in other countries, including the United States. Where that happens, the transfer is protected by safeguards approved under UK law, such as the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or standard contractual clauses. Providers based in the EU (such as Brevo) are covered by the UK's "adequacy" rules, which treat the EU as offering equivalent protection.

How long we keep it

  • Enquiries that do not become a job: we keep these for up to 12 months, in case you want to come back to us, then we delete them.
  • Customer records (when we carry out work): we keep these for at least 6 years, because tax law and the limitation period for claims require it.
  • Electrical certificates: we keep these for the life of the installation, for safety, warranty and compliance reasons.

Cookies and browser storage

This website does not use tracking cookies, advertising cookies or analytics. We do not follow you around the internet, and there is no cookie pop-up because there is nothing to consent to.

The site does use your browser's own storage in two harmless ways, and both stay on your device:

  • The quote tool saves your part-finished quote in your browser, so you do not lose it if you close the tab.
  • A "service worker" lets the quote tool keep working if your connection drops.

None of this is sent to us or to anyone else. You can clear it any time through your browser settings ("clear site data").

How we keep it secure

We take reasonable steps to keep your information safe. The website runs over a secure (HTTPS) connection, and access to your details is limited to us and the trusted providers listed above.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to:

  • Ask for a copy of the information we hold about you (a "subject access request").
  • Have inaccurate or incomplete information corrected.
  • Ask us to delete your information, where there is no legal reason for us to keep it.
  • Ask us to restrict how we use your information in certain cases.
  • Ask for your information in a portable format, or moved to another provider.
  • Object to us using your information where we rely on legitimate interests.
  • Withdraw your consent at any time, where we have relied on consent.

To use any of these rights, just contact us. We will respond within one month, and it is free.

We do not make any automated decisions about you. The instant quote tool gives your price from Pete’s real rate card. Your fixed price is confirmed in writing by Pete after a free survey.

Complaints and the ICO

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, please tell us first so we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK's data protection regulator:
